Reccer Notes: I've listened to this several times. It's sort of a comfort fic for me: Bucky rescues some kids and takes care of them. He's slowly learning to be a person again. The kids variously have traumas and health problems, and remind him keenly of Steve. The podficcer does a great job, reading in a smooth, non-intrusive sort of way that is super easy to fall into.

This is a beautiful, warm, aching performance of a beautiful, warm, aching story, and I'm so glad I got to experience it via this podfic where codeswitch brings so much to the recording. The music choices are all so good and really bring the road trip setting to life. It's very, very emotional, and I cried a little, and it stayed with me for a while after I'd finished listening.

Reccer Notes: There is nothing not to rec about this charming podfic. It's got it all--Helga's POV, wlw, snarky comments about Gryffindor and Slytherin, endorsements of self-care (i.e., Proper Relaxation), and, most importantly, not one but TWO performers! I am sure it takes loads of extra coordination, so whenever I encounter a podfic where two or more performers work together, I standing ovate at the work involved in collaborating. Here RickyPulsifer does a superb job both narrating, and expressing Helga's practical brilliance, and the_dragongirl delivers a lovely Rowena. The two voices compliment the characters, and one another, in the context of exhaustion as the hurdles involved with opening the greatest magical school for 1000 years are navigated. RickyPulsifer makes Helga's unflinchingness in the face of hard work, her love of the outdoors, and dream of teaching resonant, but she's never some bland, dull goody-two-shoes. Rather, the performance presents a balanced character, using intonation to great effect to emphasise Helga's shrewdness, internal eyerolls at Gryffindor and Slytherin, her attraction to Rowena, and her liveliness. Listen and enjoy the wisdom of Helga Hufflepuff, Self-care Queen :D.

Reccer Notes: This is one of those rare fandom treats in which a truly fantastic, fun, funny, witty, thoughtful story is not only read well, but read by the author! I always enjoy podfics performed by the author. I appreciate ALL podfic performers, but there is something about having each syllable read out as the author imagined the character/narrator intoning it that is just beyond; for me, it's like getting to enjoy podfic/fanfic in 5D or something! And Isis could not offer more of a gem here. Her humour is always spot on, and her wry reading of her truly sly and snarky retelling of a classic fairly tale is just perfect from beginning to end. I mean, the title it like a hilarious promise, and then the whole podfic just delivers on that. An oldie, and forever a goody. (Bonus lighthearted fun being poked at James Potter)

Reccer Notes: Well, you always know you’re always in for a gooder with fire_juggler, and this is no exception. In the first place, she picks a wonderful, woman-centric fic that really zeros in on Hermione and her finding something beyond work in the aftermath of the war, especially if Harry and Ron go off to the Aurors together and delve full-on into rigorous, time-consuming training schedules. In true A++ podficly fashion, this is more than an engaging story; fire_juggler’s reading makes every note reverberate—every one of Hermione’s insecurities, or fancies that she worries are girlish but indulges anyways. In a podfic full of strengths, I think a particularly note worthy one is the reading of Millicent. Fire-juggler infuses her voice with so much unashamedness, so much determination, so much passion—whether she’s engaging in Real Talk™ about politics, or advising Mrs Granger on her garden, or waxing poetic about organic produce. Also, there’s a particular scene that takes place during a birthday dinner. I won’t get spoilerey, but I will say that fire_juggler’s performance of the four characters at the table is both emotionally on-point and deeply moving. Such a great work, worthy of more than one listen.

Reccer Notes:
Gosh it's hard to know where to begin with this piece.

First off, the fic itself is so high quality! If there's one thing I love above all else it's an inverted trope, and I can't think of ever encountering one as bold as making Harry the older man in this ship. Extra bonus for time travel, Harry navigating the magical world of the 70s, and A+ First Voldemort War politics.

And then paraka's incredible reading! The story is so good, but she breathes extra life into it somehow. Her Harry is so confused, so lost, but also so adult, and capable--he finds his way. Her Severus is maybe unmatched for me--vulnererable but also cautious, vinegary, superior. And she does a superb job of keeping his voice age appropriate as the story goes on without ever being hokey. There are lines from this that I just hear in paraka's voice forever now--words spoken between them, affirmations, pledges. Harry and Severus are just SO Harry and Severus in this. But then, none of the other characters are left to the side--just as much care is put into each voice, from Dumbledore to the Potters of the 70s, to Kingsley, to Eileen and Tobias.

I listened 3x back to back and 10/10 rec this poetic experience!

HaHeePrime did a did a stellar job with an already stellar fanfic, so the result is absolutly great, and very engaging. I love HaHeePrime's voice, and her Rumble's narration voice is in turn funny, and blasé, and so distinctive! And the way it is contrasted with the voice acting for Megatron and Starscream is great, as well as the way the music was used... great work. <3

Caboose is my One True Love and GoLB gets his voice so perfectly. The story itself is such a fun romp...until shit gets real. GoLB does a fantastic job conveying both the levity and the stakes in the story with their performance.

Reccer Notes: I do not know anything about rowing. The source material has an extensive explanation about the sport and terminology and history, but I don't think you need it at all with the podfic. RevolutionaryJo does such a wonderful job of painting a full picture that I may not know exactly what "to heads" means, but I get the emotion and general anxiety that you get in any competition. (Full disclosure: There are some weird Oxford specific terms that you might need the glossary for. But don't be intimidated! It's a joy to listen to nonetheless.) It's a great fic for your found family feels, and it's downright delightful to hear Merlin be somehow worse at magic than he is in the show. This verse is an absolute joy to sink yourself into, bonus points if you're listening near water!

The use of music and sound effects also helps to make this an immersive listening experience.

Summary: Suffering from PTSD, ex-Marine Derek Hale moves back to Beacon Hills to open a bookshop and find a calmer life. That’s where he meets Stiles, completely by accident. Stiles is talkative, charming and curious. Somehow, despite the fact that he’s blind, he’s able to read Derek like no one else.

Reccer Notes: There's something about Jinxy's voice that just sucks you in and before you know it, 11 hours have gone by like a flash. It's slow and melodic, calm and paced perfectly throughout. I think it especially helps in a story like this, which details Derek's PTSD and anxious thoughts, from ramping the listener up. The story itself is an interesting twist on multiple AUs joining together, and the long slow burn of Derek/Stiles is palpable from the get go. (The phone sex scene is especially hot like burning.)

There are some really lovely touches of music, especially at the beginning, and the contrast to Jinxy's reader voice and normal voice is delightful to hear in the free talk at the end. I'd also like to point out that in that free talk they detail that they completed this in just a couple of days!! Which is astounding and absurd and I am jealous of that ability to edit.

Reccer Notes: I'm still fairly new to Critical Role, but going through the tag (and especially blackglass's back catalogue) has been a joy. A Civilized Discussion is no exception! I think it would be really easy to make Trinket's POV sound too comedic or too overly simple, but blackglass does an excellent job balancing it so that he feels like a full character. The pacing is lovely and calming and accent use helps to let you sink into the world. (Especially if you've been powering through a lot of the Vox Machina arc to catch up like I have. :P) It's just a delight to listen to.

Reccer Notes: This is one of my long time go to podfics for a little pick me up. The story itself is delightful and hilarious. I stopped watching Supernatural in S7, but the idea of Dean accidentally showing porn to little gremlins or teaching them how to swear still feels like it rings true today. That whole universe gets really angsty in fanworks pretty quick, and it's nice to consume something that feels in character, but is fun. EosRose's performance just enhances all of the jokes, and their gremlin voice is so adorable and not to be missed! It's a delightful reading undercut with a great version of exasperated Sam.

Reccer Notes: I'm a huge fan of silverandblue's style and voice, and it suits the feel of this gorgeous, tentative polyamorous soulmark fic down to the ground. They bring out all the gentle angst and longing of the pov character, and I hugely enjoy the subtle way they differentiate character voices. I often listen to this at night, as the feeling of the whole podfic is soft and easy to listen to (and by now, to me, reassuringly familiar), read by silverandblue's steady, measured voice.
If you aren't familiar with this reader, I would rec any of their podfic, but this is a great place to start.

Reccer Notes: I’ve been meaning to listen to this again because I have vivid memories of this podfic, I listened to it so often back in the day.
This is an old school SPN RPF fic from around Season 3, I think. Jared and Jensen attend a convention, and Jared watches some fans, and ends up learning more than he intended. If you were active in SPN fandom (or any fandom) in the early 2000s, back when the height of console gaming was PS2, you’ll probably recognise some behavioural patterns :D

Juice817 was my favourite podficcer back then and if our fandoms were overlapping more these days, they’d still be it now.
This podfic is funny, cute, and a lot of things that I enjoy and I’m pretty sure that some day soon I’ll finally listen to it again because the more I think about it, the more I really want to, even though I’m not in that fandom anymore and not really interested in these “characters” anymore either. It’s just that I remember this podfic as being so good that I truly want to get back into it.

Summary:

Sidney looks from Flower's arm to their handcuffs to the little nest on the floor where he assumes Kris slept. There's a giant, empty champagne bottle on the table in front of the couch, he's pretty sure the same glitter that was on Kris's face is also on his jeans, and his head still aches.
"Okay," he says loudly, "I know I'm kind of stating the obvious here, but what the hell happened last night?"

Reccer Notes: I love this podficcer’s voice. It’s like a comfort blanket to me at this point. They also strongly remind me of Juice817 and that’s another podficcer whom I adore and who used to be an audible comfort blanket back when I was still into SPN RPF.

ANYWAY. Like I said, their voice is lovely and I really enjoy listening to them. The fic is also pretty well written. What really stuck in my mind were the little bits of characterisation you can glean just from small details of things the characters do.

This podficcer doesn’t try to give the Russians an accent, and as always, that's fine by me. It's just a really cute, well-read podfic, perfect to pass the time.

Reccer Notes: I listened to this very recently and oh boy, was it good. The first part focuses entirely on the emotional aftermath of safewording from dom!Merlin's POV, while the second part is a prequel and focuses on the emotional and physical impact of scening/pain play from sub!Gwaine's POV. There's a third part in this series that hasn't been podficced but it's pure filth and not necessary to read for either one of the parts.
As for the podfic by meri: I enjoy meri's reading style. It's nicely paced, and works really well for these stories. The emotional parts and the dialogue feel alive and let you sink into the story and the emotions of the story, which is something I just really like about podfis.

This is a podfic you can listen to without any previous knowledge of the fandom/characters. Knowing the characters helps to visualise them but you can just as well insert OCs :)

Also, if these are podfics that interest you, I'd recommend grabbing them while the audiofic archive works. It's been unreliable over the last couple of years, so I've lost trust in it and would recommend downloading anything that you might want now or later as long as the archive is up. If the file has disappeared by the time you get around to this rec, I have copies and am willing to share.

Summary: In which Sidney and Geno join the same online fantasy hockey league. And fall in love.

Reccer Notes: Another Pod_Together project, this one an epistolary! They aren’t hockey players but online fantasy hockey players, and there’s nothing about this podfic I don’t love.
All the additional voices bring so much life and character to this fic. The different forms of media make for an interesting story with a bunch of cool multimedia sound-effects. The half hour passes much too fast, honestly. As a bonus, I just ADORE how Geno is written in this one.

This podficcer doesn’t try to give the Russians an accent but many of the international characters are voiced by international podficcers so their native accents shine through - which is just perfect, tbh.

Reccer Notes: Reenajenkins’ matter of fact delivery suits this narration-heavy character study perfectly. Her usual sparse, conversational style unexpectedly pulls out the physicality of movement in this, all the longing, the regret, and fear that this story sees Luke experience. The emotional pitch of the storytelling is just right to pull me in, and the hook at the end always brings me to tears.
